This natural fortress of a cliff top town in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada is situated on an island of rock carved out by the River rio Aguas. The houses, "casas colgadas" cling to the very edge of the abyss. What used to be the main costal road from Alicante to Almeria has since the motorway been used mainly by locals. The best roadside view points are just after you have come over the bridge heading south or by the Sol De Andalucia restaurant if you're going north.
The town's romanesque church of Santa Maria, built over the former mosque, has a 16th century nave where you can se Mudejas woodwork. The gable end of the chuurch was built between 1765 and 1768. The massive main door is 19th century. You can see statues of the patron saints of Sorbas: San Roque and San Jose, on the corners of the bell tower. Inside is a beautiful statue of the Virgin. Next door, in the town square, is the Town Hall which might have been one of the mansions belonging to the Duke of Alba. Also there are the houses of the Duke de Valoig and of the Marqués de Carpio. There is a market in the square every Thursday. At the highest point in the town where there used to be a castle is now a block of flatts. The view from there is spectacular.
The Barrio de las Alfarerias or pottery quarter has been in existence since the moorish ocupation and some of the old kilns of moorish origin can still be seen and were still in use untill quite recently. Cheap Chinese imports have decimated the pottery industry but some traditional pottery and ceramics are still being produced and may be purchased from the workshops of the potters themselves. Two other attractions of the Alfarerias are an old olive oil factory (yes the Meson la Almazara) and an old woolen textile factory now a museum. A major industry that previously contributed to the town's prosperity was gypsum extraction. The largest gypsum mine in europe is not more than ten kilometres away in Los Yesares. Mining is still taking place but of the clay cliffs that used to be the wonder of Sorbas as you crossed over the river but have now been turned into bricks. This has been an environmental disaster of which no one in the town speaks but must all feel.
Nearby are the Cuevas of Sorbas located in the Natural park - Paraje Natural de Karst en Yesos de Sorbas, a desert gypsum landscape of outstanding natural beauty covering 2,375 hectars. It is one of the most important Karst (gypum) landscapes in the world. It is full of ravines like the Baranco del Diablo or 'Devil's Gulch', unique flora and fauna and of course caves such as the prehistoric Cueva del Agua and Cueva de Covadura which are many kilometers in length. The Cuevas De Sobas has a visitor centre just off the main road close to the river Rio Aguas. Information about it may also be obtained in the Visitor's centre in Sorbas: the Centro de Interpretación Los Yesares, in calle Terraplén at the entry to the town.
